Safety Tips for Outdoor Decorating

Many people are decorating the outside of their home for the season. Here are some basic tips to keep everyone safe while setting up

Use outdoor lights only outside your home.
Use a fiberglass ladder with the proper weight rating for you. Don't use an aluminum ladder when working with any kind of electrical devices.
Point light bulb sockets down and make sure bulbs are secure to minimize moisture accumulation.
Carefully read all lighting decoration directions.
Only use an outdoor extension cords outside.
Use UL-Listed, 3-Wire Grounded Cords that are plugged into GFCI Protected Receptacles only. Outdoor electrical connectors and cords need to be above ground and out of water.
Fasten the lights securely to your home. Do not do anything that could damage the wire insulation.
Before replacing any bulbs unplug the light strands.
When connecting light strands, make sure the receptacle and plug connection are under an area protected from moisture.
Do not use electric lights or decorative ornaments on a metallic tree. A colored spotlight a festive alternative.
