Winter Landscape Tips in the Temecula Valley

Category: Real Estate News  |  Permalink

Published: Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Winter has finally arrived in the Temecula Valley. With the cooler weather lawns will need less water so adjust your watering schedule to fewer days during the week. Trees and shrubs can be watered once a week and citrus trees can be watered just once a month. This is also a great time to transplant small trees and shrubs. You can fertilize "cool-season" lawns, like bluegrass, using fertilizer made particularly for fall. Check to see that is has a pre-emergent herbicide. "Warm-season" lawns, like Bermuda grass, should not be fertilized so that it can go dormant for the winter. Don't be tempted to fertilize roses during the month, they need to go dormant for a few months and they will reward you with beautiful blooms later. Pruning is necessary during this time and fruit trees cut back will benefit from being sprayed with dormant oil which will prevent fungal diseases and pest problems.

In Temecula we don't have many frosts so keep plantings well-watered so when a freeze does occur your plants are more likely to survive. A plant that is kept well-hydrated will fare better in a frost situation. Snails and slugs will be out so use bait as needed.

Taking a few extra steps to protect your landscaping during the winter months will pay off in a beautiful yard in the spring.
